"The
Bennett "
Helps you save money
with lower energy costs
- Immediately eliminates the chimney
effect (sometimes called stack effect or back draft) in the
garbage chute and changes the building envelope
- Detailed engineering studies done for us by the University of Western Ontario
have shown that significant energy savings are immediately realized
and installations in place are authenticating the studies results. A Study by the Engineering Department
at the University of Western Ontario has shown that you can expect up to 18 percent savings in heating costs, and up to 10 percent
savings in Air Conditioning Costs. The larger the building the more dollars you save, and your payback may be just a few months!
The Engineering Report has provided us with a spreadsheet to calculate your savings, if you need further information, contact us.
The Theory:
High-rise residential buildings
use a 24" to 28" garbage chute (open at the bottom and
the top) that allows the garbage to free-fall into a bin or compactor
from access doors at each floor. This chute creates a 24"
hole in the building allowing the chimney effect to draw heated air
out through the roof top opening.
"The Bennett" is an Energy Savings System
The key component is "the
Bennett" - the only device specifically listed by Underwriters
Laboratories for use as a garbage chute closure. "The Bennett"
provides a full 1-1/2 Hour protection rating and as such satisfies
the building code requirement for garbage chute closures in all
jurisdictions throughout North America. "The Bennett"
closes and seals the garbage chute except to let the
garbage pass through.
This simple action ends the "chimney"
or "stack" effect of the garbage chute. Until "the
Bennett Solution's" introduction, design criteria
for high-rise garbage chutes have been minimal at best. All open
chutes cause an upward moving draft of air that:
- Overcomes exhaust fans in any
garbage room and draws the odor of garbage up into the chute
and building
- Draws heated or air-conditioned
air, out of the building through open disposal doors or - by
simple heat transfers through the closed doors.
"The Bennett"
stops the flow of air from moving up the chute, eliminating the
heat or cooling loss.

Definition - The Chimney Effect:
A phenomenon, that occurs whenever
a temperature differential exists between the interior and exterior
of an enclosure. In the garbage chute of a high-rise building
these temperature differentials are present, causing air to flow
up through this shaft creating the chimney effect. This situation
is further compounded by the venturi effect, caused by the wind
at the top of the building, and the height of the building.
