The Product

OUR CUSTOMERS: all occupants, owners and building managers of any high-rise residential complex.

The Product:

The reader should have an understanding of the volume of garbage being discharged. The following is a list of some average daily outputs of waste in various types of buildings. It should be kept in mind that these figures vary with the type of building. The rubbish estimates below are averages per day and may be accumulated in one or two peak periods.

Apartments: 5 lb. (2 kg.) /apartment – 1lb (.5 kg.) / bedroom; Hospitals: 8lb (4 kg.) / bed; Convalescent Hospital: 3 lb. (1.5 kg.) / person; Homes for the aged: 6 lb. (3 kg.) / person; Hotels & Motels: 3 lb. (1.5 kg.) / room; Schools: 10 lb. (4.5 kg.) / room plus ¼ lb. (.1 kg) / pupil; Office Buildings: 1 lb. / 100 square feet (0.5 kg. / liter).

A garbage discharge chute opening has a diameter of 24” - which is equivalent to 452.3 square inches.

The Bennett has been designed to be a shut-off gate; it is a self-closing door controlling the garbage discharge chute outlet.

How it works:

Attached to the concrete fire separation it operates two-control doors known as the main door and closing plate.

The main door remains closed at all times and is counterbalanced on a locking hinge assembly. It only opens to allow garbage to pass through by way of a predetermined force striking its surface. Objects of less than ½ lb. (.2 kg.) will sit on top of the main closing door until the weight exceeds the predetermined release force. Then the main door will open, As soon as the objects are deposited in the bin, or compactor throat, the positive locking action causes the main door to snap shut sealing the chute.

The closing plate runs on inclined tracks and is held open, which can be released manually, or by a fusible link. In the closed position the closing plate provides a secondary closure.

The closing plate also incorporates an alternate release mechanism namely a fusible link. This fusible link allows a ball valve to open, allowing water to operate the actuator piston whose movement causes the closing plate to release and close.

Water will automatically spray on top of the closing plate and on top of the main door.

This results in an air-water seal on the closing plate, ensuring that no smoke and fumes can be sucked up into the chute by the stack effect or back draft of tall buildings.

·         The Bennett contains the required code control, 3.5.3.3. (2) Automatic, self-latching closure held open by a fusible link.
